Braces in Today’s World

The art of moving teeth via orthodontics has been present for decades. Of course, the field of orthodontics has evolved over time. Today, braces have developed in ways such as:

  • Gentler force to improve comfort
  • Digital imaging and 3D scans
  • Less frequent appointments for adjustments needed

FAQ

What do braces treat?

Dental braces can help a variety of teeth and jaw misalignment problems, including:

  • Crooked and rotated teeth
  • Underbite
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Overcrowding
  • Open bite
  • Overbite, overjet

Malocclusion can impact long-term dental health when left unaddressed. This potentially leads to problems like tooth decay, gum disease, and bone loss, as the poor position of teeth frequently impacts dental hygiene.

Who can get braces?

It’s never a bad time to improve your smile.

  • For kids, urgent orthodontic issues should be addressed early on.
  • Teens can get braces once all permanent teeth have erupted.
  • Adult braces are now common: 1 in 4 braces patients are adults. [1]

Your gums, teeth, and overall health should be in generally good condition to be eligible for orthodontic braces.

What should I expect from braces?

Once we confirm that braces are right for you, we take X-rays, photos and digital/analogue mould of your teeth and jaws before designing a customised treatment plan.

After we have installed your braces, we will see you regularly for check-ups and adjustments. Once treatment has been completed, wear your retainers to keep your new smile in place.

Complex cases with severe issues may need additional procedures for orthodontic braces treatment to be successful.

How long do braces take?

Braces can take as little as 12 months. The average treatment time for braces can range from 1 to 3 years.

The type of dental conditions addressed and severity of each patient’s case will determine treatment duration.

What’s the difference between braces and Invisalign?

Both of these dental treatments are great options. They each have their own benefits.

Braces can help with patient compliance, and some find them more cost-effective.

Invisalign trays can be very comfortable and discreet, as the clear aligners are custom-fit and nearly invisible! There are also no food restrictions with invisible aligners.

Does getting braces hurt?

You may experience some mild soreness or friction, especially in the very beginning and when you first come for regular adjustment of the braces. Your mouth and teeth will soon adjust to the feeling. It will be familiar and should not cause you extreme pain.

The general consensus is that this temporary and occasional discomfort is worth the lifetime of improved smile, confidence with reduced risks of other malocclusion-related dental issues.

What types of braces are available?

Traditional metal braces are made with metal brackets. With the improvement in technology, there are braces with clear brackets (known as clear braces or ceramic braces).

Another option is self-ligating braces, which mechanically hold the arch wire without elastic ties (such as Damon braces). These tend to result in more comfort due to less force and friction being applied to the teeth and are available in clear or metal.
